Gym People (part 1)
I saw an article online today that listed 10 celebrities
who “lost their figure”. The majority of
them were women who had babies. One of
the snide commits accompanying a photo was “too busy being a parent to schedule
some gym time” and I thought two things.
One: I bet whoever wrote this article is overweight
themselves. And…
Two: Even celebrities hate going to the gym. I wonder if
they hate going for the same reasons I do.
Why I hate going to the gym reason or excuse 2: People (part
1)
Like anyone who has struggled with their weight I have
been a member of multiple gyms and they all have the basic six types of people.
I found them in two different states and four different gyms so I am positive I
can walk into any gym and point these people out. Here are the first two.
In no particular order there are the “Hoarders”. These
people run around the gym and collect all the things they need to work out before
they even start working out. They then
pile their collection (weights, medicine balls, bar attachments) around a
machine that they claim with no regards to those around them. They have now utilized half the gyms
resources and they work out a snail’s pace.
In my current gym twice I have started using a machine that had crap
piled around it only to have someone come up to me apologetically and say, “I’m
sorry, I’m still using this.”
On the free weights side of my gym there is always the “Workout
Bench Guy.” This guy pulls a workout bench up to the barbell rack and effectively
blocks off half of it. Then, to make
matters worse, he stairs intensely at himself in the mirror wall while doing
endless bicep curls. He effectively blocks
off the weights between 15 and 45 pounds and only uses the 25 pound barbells. I have to reach over or around him to get what
I need making the whole situation uncomfortable. I usually give up and think to
myself, “I’ll get a run in and then maybe the hoarder and the workout bench guy
will be done when I come back.” They
never are. That brings me today.
The Run.
I run outside sometimes with headphones but I am always
afraid I am not going to hear the car that’s going to mow me down. So after work this afternoon I didn’t wear
them during my jog. Only 5 days in and I
have already added distance to my jog. I
am somewhere in the two and a half mile range in 30 minutes now. Not respectable but considering it’s been
months since I jogged I will take it. I
added an additional 5 minutes of walking after the run partly to cool down and
partly because I plan on upping my jog time to 35 minutes starting Monday and that is not all I plan on adding.
My wife informed me today that her goal is more ambitious
than mine. She wants to do a minimum of
45 minutes a day. On account of work
today she was only able to do a 46 minutes speed walk, still surpassing her
goal.
Daily Recap:
Matt – 30 Min. Jog
Kelly – 45 Min. Speedwalk
