Day 1: Let the Battle Begin!

So… why the blog?

I’m betting that I am not alone, that is, there are many people out there like me and you know who you are… you have a gym membership but don’t go, have spent good money on exercise equipment that you don’t use, have gone on all kinds of crazy diets and lost weight only to rediscover the joy of cake and those pants you bought to reward you self after you lost the weight are now too tight to wear.  We are normal.

I have thought several times about blogging but could never come up with a topic that I thought would be interesting enough to keep me typing.  Recently I read about people who have taken on year long projects: writing, drawing, sculpting, and so on and really liked the idea so I thought what could I do?  Then it came to me.

I will wage a yearlong battle with exercise and share all the details. During the process I would like to lose 40 pounds.  It may or may not be interesting but I am really selfish and doing this more for me than an audience.  My wife liked the idea and is joining me in my war.  The rules are simple at least 30 minutes of exercise must be done a day no matter what. Now let the battle begin.

Let’s Start Running.

I have not ran in a very long time for any extended period of time so right out the gate I figure why not go for a 30 minute jog before work and wouldn't you believe it, sabotage!  I forgot to reset my morning alarm and got up at my normal time that means I had to run when I got home from work.  Not the best start but not really a problem an in case you are wondering my alarm is now set for 4:50 AM.

My wife was working in California she started her day in beautiful Monarch Beach with a nice 1 hour speed walk and some beautiful scenery.

For me, it was a beautiful day and when I got home I changed and headed out. When my lungs started to burn I check my watch sure I was at least 10 minutes in.  No, I was only 4 min. in.  Then I saw a penny but I didn’t pick it up because it was tails up and I thought that would bring bad luck and I really could not afford that right now.

I jog the same road that has a library and a church on it so there is also steady stream of cars.  People were waving to me and I couldn't tell if they were being polite or were just concerned at the sight of a fat man jogging at an incredible 3 miles an hour sweating and gasping for air or maybe they were wondering if they should stop and offer me a ride. My legs hurt and my brain screamed obscenities at me but I kept going.
Then I saw two more joggers and started running faster at about maybe 4 miles an hour because I didn't want the humiliation of being passed.  Finally it was over.  I had a massive side stitch and my legs tingled but day one is now in the books.

The Daily Recap:
Matt: 30 min. Jog
Kelly: 1 hour speed walk
