This morning was interesting. Woke up a little warm around 7 and Kelly
check the AC and we had no power in our hotel room. It turns out Boston had blown a transformer
and half the city was dark that left us wondering what we were going to
do. Without water there would be no way
to take showers after working out and anyone who has ever sat around in gym
clothes knows you start to smell ripe after a while.
We got dressed and met some friends down stairs, caught a
cab and made our way to the other side of the city, the non-third world side
with electricity and running water for a nice hot breakfast. The time between getting in the cab and
starting our morning exercise walk down Common Wealth was full of so many comical
mishaps that I could literally write a book about those two hours. For the sake of time and space I will
compress the events into as short a description as possible.
The cab driver managed to turn a $10 fare into a $36
dollar fare in which he was informed we would not pay. The restaurant we wanted to eat at was so
packed the line looped around the inside and back out the door. You had to order your food and get it at the
counter before you were allowed to sit.
Our first scouting trip, for another diner, was
unsuccessful and after we wound back where we started some of us held our place
in line while others went on a recon mission to find a less busy diner. That was
successful. Our new restaurant quickly
became so busy service was terrible and people were walking out. Meanwhile we found out that the last time a
transformer blew the city was without power for four days.
After lunacy of that and a completed breakfast we did a
thirty five minute walk down Common Wealth in the shade of the trees. It was a beautiful morning filled with dog
walkers and people watching. By the time
we returned to the hotel the electricity was on and Kelly had to go to
work. Feeling a little sluggish from a
heavy breakfast complete with roasted potatoes and scrambled eggs with cheese I
decided to hit the gym and burn off some extra calories with a nice 20 minute
jog.
Tonight we will get more walking in since the plan right
now is to walk to the North End for dinner which is a good 45 minutes away on
foot. After a good heavy Italian meal we
should walk back as well but we will see.
My plan is to duck into Mike’s Pastries after dinner for some chocolate
covered stuffed cannolis and I may just be in a sugar coma and forced to take a
cab back. Hopefully we won’t wind up in
Cambridge wondering how we got there and why is it so dark?
